Low interstellar abundance of O 2 confirmed by the PIROG 8 balloon experiment

چکیده
Using a balloon-borne 60 cm telescope equipped with an SIS receiver we have searched for the 425 GHz molecular oxygen line in the NGC7538 and the W51 regions. The experiment was technically successful (confirmed by the detection of the 13 CO (4–3) line at 440 GHz), but we failed to detect emission from molecular oxygen. The inferred upper limits of the O 2 /CO ratio are 0.04 and 0.05 (3 σ) for the two regions, which are the lowest upper limits so far determined for Galactic clouds.

Herschel/HIFI observations of interstellar OH and H2O towards W49N : a probe of diffuse clouds with a small molecular fraction
We report the detection of absorption by interstellar hydroxyl cations and water cations, along the sight-line to the bright continuum source W49N. We have used Herschel’s HIFI instrument, in dual beam switch mode, to observe the 972 GHz N = 1–0 transition of OH and the 1115 GHz 111−000 transition of ortho-H2O. The resultant spectra show absorption by ortho-H2O, and strong absorption by OH, in ...
متن کاملOxygen in dense interstellar gas ? The oxygen abundance of the star forming core ρ Oph A
Context. Oxygen is the third most abundant element in the universe, but its chemistry in the interstellar medium is still not well understood. Aims. In order to critically examine the entire oxygen budget, we attempt here initially to estimate the abundance of atomic oxygen, O, in the only one region, where molecular oxygen, O2, has been detected to date. Methods. We analyse ISOCAM-CVF spectral...
متن کاملFuse Determination of a Low Deuterium Abundance along an Extended Sight Line in the Galactic Disk
We present a study of the deuterium abundance along the extended sight line toward HD90087 with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). HD 90087 is a O9.5III star located in the Galactic disk at a distance of ∼ 2.7 kpc away from the Sun. Both in terms of distance and column densities, HD 90087 has the longest and densest sight line observed in the Galactic disk for which a deuterium ...
متن کاملOn the Variation of Deuterium and Oxygen Abundances in the Local Interstellar Medium
The first observations of deuterium and oxygen in the Local Interstellar Medium (LISM) obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) can be used to search for local abundance variations. While the very limited sample of these first data may be consistent with no variations, they do offer a hint of anti-correlated variations between D/H and O/H. If confirmed by more data (which...
متن کاملChemical Abundance Ratios and Gas-phase Mixing in Dwarf Galaxy Evolution
Because of their low gravitational energies dwarf galaxies are greatly exposed to energetical influences by the interstellar medium, like e.g. stellar radiation, winds or explosions, or by their environment. While the metallicity depletion in dwarf galaxies can be explained in general by supernova-driven galactic winds, the reason for their low N/O ratios at low O abundance is not yet completel...
